5. Do it your way!
Updated: Apr 29, 2020
When given a bit of time on my hands I'm not the quickest to get things done, but finally this morning I spoke to my mum about My Real Testament. The Q and A didn't quite go as planned, because it felt very personal for her and of course I'm not a child anymore, but I did get a lot out of the conversation which could help others.
The biggest thing is that the Q and A format may not be the best option for you. Instead you may wish to set up a video camera (or just use your mobile phone) and address your child/children separately. You may wish to type or handwrite a letter, or even create a journal. Don't forget to create a backup (maybe via the cloud or USB stick) or even share it as soon as it's created. At the end of the day all that matters is that you do what you think is best and more importantly, make a start.
Obviously the best option would be if you were able to talk directly to your child/children when mature, but our conversation served as a reminder, especially during this worldwide pandemic, that you don't have to work in a high-risk job to be risking your life day-to-day. Nothing really beats talking directly to somebody, but as you can see in the news or may have experienced first-hand some of us don't always get that luxury.
On a side note, I had been feeling a bit unhealthy and out of shape before the lockdown in the UK, but I stumbled across The Game Changers on Netflix: wow!!! A few key changes to my diet and I'm feeling great, plus I've also had the energy to do more as well as think more clear. I'm now on a 5-year plan to strengthen and cleanse my heart (after being told that it wasn't possible!). I feel thankful to the entire team behind the documentary, and of course to the Executive Producers, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan. As a side note I try and source local food to keep my carbon footprint low.
Back on subject and following this post I'm going to start helping friends and families with their own real testaments. I'm not going to be pushy of course: it will simply be a link to the site and an offer to assist in any way. It can be a difficult subject for a lot of people so I'm not going to become a preacher!
While talking to my mum we also discussed the anxiety caused by the current epidemic, Covid-19. For this reason I admitted that I'm only checking the news once a day and that's it. The news stories are so similar each day that getting too absorbed into them could cause a dark hole to appear for some. We finished by both acknowledging that we have a lot of time to make up for after the lockdown, with plenty of family days together to be planned.
You may recall my first post about anxiety, and how I use it as a tool to help me address anything that's an issue. I'm now grateful for feelings of anxiety, and use it to my advantage. Here is a link to the first post if you wish to see it: The Journey Begins.
Even when I'm back at work full-time I'll be doing what I can to help, including complete strangers. It will be a pleasure to try and make a positive difference. That's what my plans are now, so I'll share that progress in the next blog post. I'm only an email away if you wish to send a message, or even chat on social media.
